SFP Works Training Guide
Follow the correct SFP Works workflow for Form 1040-X based on where the taxpayer’s original return was prepared.
Start here
Choose the workflow that matches the taxpayer’s original filing. Keeping these paths separate makes the amendment process easier to follow.
The original return is already in Client Manager. Open the accepted return and start the amendment from the existing client record.
The original return was prepared outside SFP Works. Use the filed return to establish the original amounts while preparing the correction.
Common corrections
A W-2, 1099, or another income source was omitted.
The filing status, dependent information, or other taxpayer information needs correction.
A credit, deduction, adjustment, or related item was missed or entered incorrectly.
Information on the previously filed return needs to be corrected or updated.
Scenario 1
Because the filed return is already available in SFP Works, begin with the taxpayer’s existing client record.
Sign in to SFP Works, locate the taxpayer, and open the accepted return that needs to be amended.

From Client Management, locate the Others area and select File Amended Return.
Update the income, deduction, credit, dependent, or other information that needs correction. Review how the changes flow to Form 1040-X.
Complete the explanation of changes, then review Form 1040-X and all affected forms and schedules before filing.
Scenario 2
Use a complete copy of the return as originally filed so the original figures and corrected figures can be compared accurately.
Use the taxpayer’s filed return or appropriate IRS records. Do not recreate original figures from memory.
Create the taxpayer return and select the applicable Form 1040-X workflow. Verify the taxpayer and tax year before continuing.

Enter the complete and accurate information supported by the taxpayer’s current documentation.
Use the originally filed return to enter the applicable original amounts on Form 1040-X, then review the calculated changes and corrected amounts.

Before filing
A short final review helps prevent an amendment from creating another correction later.
IRS filing note
Federal e-file eligibility depends on the tax period, the original filing method, and current IRS and software availability. Verify the current requirements before submission.
