Understanding an Authorized IRS E-File Provider

An Authorized IRS E-File Provider is a business, organization, or person that has been approved to participate in IRS e-filing after meeting specific criteria.

How to Become an Authorized IRS E-File Provider

Apply for an EFIN: To become an Authorized IRS E-File Provider, you must apply for an Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN).

Suitability Check: Once your application is submitted, the IRS will conduct a suitability check.

Acceptance Letter: After passing the suitability check, you will receive an acceptance letter containing your EFIN.

What is an EFIN?

An EFIN, or Electronic Filing Identification Number, is assigned by the IRS to firms that have completed the e-File application process. It is required to file tax returns electronically.

How Long Does It Take to Get an EFIN?

The process to obtain an EFIN typically takes around 45 days. Therefore, it’s important to start well in advance of tax season. However the process can vary in time so in some instances you can expect your EFIN in a couple weeks.

Step 1 – Create an IRS E-Services Account

This account enables you to interact with the IRS electronically. Since the process can take several days, plan accordingly. To apply for this account, you need to:

  1. Provide your full legal name, Social Security number, date of birth, a valid phone number, email address, and home mailing address (ensure this is accurate, as your confirmation will be mailed here).
  2. Provide your Adjusted Gross Income from the current or prior tax year.
  3. Create a username, password, PIN, and select and answer a security reminder question. Note: Do NOT lose this information regaining access to lost e-services accounts can be difficult and time consuming. Make sure your login information is saved somewhere on your device or written down for your records.
  4. Ensure every principal and responsible official in your firm signs up for e-services.
  5. Confirm your registration within 28 days of receiving your confirmation code by mail.

Step 2 – Submit Your Application to Become an Authorized IRS E-File Provider

Once the necessary individuals are approved for e-services, your firm can start the application to become an Authorized E-File Provider. The application process is extensive and can take up to 45 days for approval. Key steps include:

  1. Provide identification information for your firm.
  2. Select your e-file provider option. Since you will be preparing and e-filing client returns, choose “Electronic Return Originator (ERO)”.
  3. Enter information about each principal and responsible official in your organization.
  4. If a principal or responsible official is certified or licensed (e.g., CPA, attorney, enrolled agent), they must enter current professional status information.
  5. All other individuals need to provide fingerprints to the IRS. Contact SwiftFP and one of our representatives will be more than happy to assist you in making a fingerprint appointment at the closest and most convenient location for you.

Step 3 – Pass a Suitability Check

The IRS will perform a suitability check for your firm and each person listed on your application, including principals and responsible officials. This process may include a credit check, a tax compliance check, a criminal background check, and a review of prior compliance with IRS e-file requirements.

Once approved, you will receive an acceptance letter from the IRS containing your EFIN.
